Thursday, August 10, 2017

In a winner take all game, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs defeated the Jamestown Jammers 8-4 and are your 2017 PGCBL Champions (Mohawk Valley’s 2nd in 3 years).

In the bottom of the 2nd the jammers got on the board first by scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. Skyler Valentine (UTSA) led the inning off with a single, followed by an Alex O’Donnell (Mercyhurst) triple that scored valentine. Jimmy Standohar (Mercyhurst) ripped an RBI single to put the Jammers up 2-0 after 2.

The DiamondDawgs would answer back in the top of the 3rd by scoring 3 runs on 3 hits to take a 3-2 lead. Mohawk Valley would add another run in the top of the 4th when Ben Porter (Columbia) crushed a solo home run over the left field fence to give the DiamondDawgs a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the frame the Jammers would tie the game by scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. The inning got started with back to back walks, followed by RBI singles from Connor Rule (Kansas State) and John Conti (Canisius) that even the score at 4 after 4 complete innings.

But once again the DiamondDawgs would return the call by taking the lead in the top of the 5th as Alexis Monge-Rodriguez (Barry) would triple and score on a Tim Zeng (Fairfield) double to give the DiamondDawgs a 5-4 lead.

The DiamondDawgs bullpen was lights out as Levi Abrahamson (Treasure Valley CC) and Zach Vennaro (Mount Olive) each threw 2 scoreless innings out of the pen to keep the Jammers offense in check.

The jammers would have plenty of opportunities late in the game but did not score after the 4th inning as the DiamondDawgs would continue to add to their lead by scoring runs in the 8th (1 run) and 9th (2 runs) inning to take an 8-4 lead.

That would end up being the final score (8-4), as the Mohawk Valley Diamondawgs would take game 3 at Diethrick Park and be crowned the 2017 PGCBL Champions.
